🏥 What is Neuvola?

Neuvola (Finnish for "advice place") is Finland's free public health clinic system for expectant parents and children from birth to age 6. It is one of Finland's most celebrated social services and has been running since the 1940s. Every family living in Finland — Finnish citizens and foreigners alike — can use neuvola services for free regardless of income or employment status.

Each family is assigned a dedicated public health nurse (terveydenhoitaja) who follows you throughout the entire neuvola journey. You will visit the same nurse regularly, which builds real trust and continuity of care. A doctor also participates in the broader health checks.

📍 How to Find Your Neuvola Your neuvola is determined by your home address (municipality). Search your city name + "neuvola" to find the right clinic, or ask at your local health centre (terveyskeskus). In Helsinki, Turku, Tampere and most cities you can also book appointments online via their health portals.

🤰 When Does It Start?

Neuvola begins during pregnancy — ideally in the first trimester, around weeks 8–10. You don't need a referral: simply call or book online at your local äitiysneuvola (maternity neuvola). It's recommended to make contact as soon as you know you are pregnant so you can be registered and begin prenatal monitoring.

💡 For Foreigners You are entitled to neuvola services as soon as you have a Finnish personal identity code (henkilötunnus) and are registered at a Finnish address. Even if your registration is in progress, contact the local health centre — they will usually accommodate you.

  • Vaccination record (if transferred from abroad)
  • Any previous medical records or hospital letters
  • List of questions or concerns — write them down beforehand!

🌍 Language Support

Most neuvola nurses speak Finnish and often Swedish (in bilingual municipalities). English is widely understood in cities, but not guaranteed everywhere. You have the right to a free interpreter — always request one when booking if you need it.

🇫🇮 Finnish 🇸🇪 Swedish 🇬🇧 English (cities) 🔤 Free interpreter available
💡 Interpreter Tip When booking your neuvola appointment, say: "Tarvitsen tulkin" (I need an interpreter) or explain in English. The municipality is legally obligated to arrange interpretation services free of charge.

📦 The Maternity Box (Äitiyspakkaus)

One of Finland's most iconic traditions — expectant mothers who have attended a neuvola visit before week 22 of pregnancy are entitled to a free maternity box from Kela. The box contains around 50 baby items: clothing, bedding, hygiene products, and more. You can choose the box or a cash grant (€170) instead.

✅ Eligibility You must have lived in Finland for at least 180 days before your due date and have your first neuvola check before week 22. Apply via Kela (kela.fi) — you'll need a certificate from neuvola confirming your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is neuvola really free for foreigners too?
Yes. Neuvola services are free for all families registered in Finland regardless of nationality, immigration status, or employment. You only need a Finnish address and personal identity code. Even asylum seekers and undocumented residents may access emergency maternal care — ask your municipality for guidance.
What if I miss a visit?
Call and reschedule as soon as possible. Missing an occasional visit is not a problem — the nurse will not judge you. Consistent attendance is encouraged mainly because it ensures your child's vaccinations stay on schedule and developmental issues are caught early.
Can single parents or same-sex couples use neuvola?
Absolutely. Finnish neuvola is inclusive and serves all family types equally. The "wide health checks" discuss the whole family unit in whatever form it takes — single parent, two mums, two dads, blended families, grandparent caregivers, etc.
What vaccines does my child get for free?
Finland's national vaccination programme covers: DTaP-IPV-Hib-HepB (6-in-1), Rotavirus, PCV (pneumococcal), MMR (measles-mumps-rubella), Varicella (chickenpox), and influenza (yearly, recommended). All are free at neuvola.
My child was born abroad — can I still join the neuvola system?
Yes. When you move to Finland with a child under 6, you can register at your local lastenneuvola. Bring whatever health records and vaccination history you have from the home country. The nurse will assess which vaccinations need to be caught up.
What happens after age 6?
After the final neuvola check (around age 6), your child's health monitoring moves to kouluterveydenhuolto — the school health service. The school nurse becomes the new regular contact and regular check-ups continue through secondary school.
