📖 Introduction to YKI Puhuminen

Everything you need to know before you open your mouth in the exam room.

Test Setting

You sit in a classroom with other examinees. You speak into a microphone. Recordings are sent for evaluation.

Approximately 30–45 minutes for the full speaking section, including preparation time.

You need B1 to pass for citizenship. B2 is the top grade at intermediate level.

Test Structure — 4 Task Types

Format

⏳ Prep: 1 min | 🎤 Speak: 1.5 min

Task 1 – Kertominen (Narration)

You get a topic with bullet point questions. You prepare for 1 minute (notes allowed), then speak for 1.5 minutes. Try to speak the whole time! Topics are personal: family, hobbies, experiences, comparisons.

Task 2 – Keskustelu (Conversation)

A realistic dialogue scenario. You hear the other party's lines from a recording (marked with *****). You respond naturally within the time shown in brackets. Example: a phone call, at a shop, with a neighbour.

Task 3 – Tilanteet (Short Situations)

5 short real-life situations. You hear a number, read the task (20 sec), then speak (30 sec). Examples: calling a train station, apologising for being late, asking a pharmacist for help.

Task 4 – Mielipide (Opinion)

Choose A or B topic. You get 2 minutes to prepare, then 2 minutes to speak your opinion. Use the bullet hints but also add your own ideas. Topics: family money, media, environment, elderly care, etc.

Top Tips to Pass

Strategy

• 📝
  Use your prep time wisely. In Kertominen (1 min) and Mielipide (2 min), jot down keywords — not full sentences. Keywords keep you on track without making you sound like you're reading.
• 🗣️
  Keep talking! Silence is your biggest enemy. If you forget a word, describe it: "se on sellainen asia, jolla..." or use "tarkoitan..." to buy time.
• ⏳
  Fill the time. In narration tasks you don't have to answer every bullet point — but you must fill the 1.5 or 2 minutes. It is better to talk too much than too little.
• 💬
  Natural conversation beats perfect grammar. The test evaluates whether you can COMMUNICATE in Finnish, not whether you know every grammar rule. A clear simple sentence beats a complex broken one.
• 🎯
  Address the task directly. Start your Kertominen with a clear opener: "Haluan kertoa..." or "Minulle tärkeä ihminen on..." — this shows you understood the task immediately.
• 🔄
  In Tilanteet, read all lines before speaking. You have 20 seconds — scan the full situation to understand the context before you start your 30-second response.
• 📞
  In Keskustelu, respond naturally to what "they" said. Acknowledge the other person: "Selvä!", "Hyvä idea!", "Anteeksi, mutta..." — this sounds much more natural and scores higher.
• 🧠
  In Mielipide, use connectors. Ensinnäkin... toiseksi... lisäksi... toisaalta... mielestäni... koska... — these linking words show B2-level organisation of thought.

💡 The YKI test does NOT evaluate your opinions — only your Finnish. A "stupid" answer in clear Finnish scores the same as a clever answer. Focus on speaking clearly and filling the time!

Ystäväsi on kutsunut sinut kylään ensi lauantaina kello 15. Sinulla on kuitenkin jo suunnitelma samalle ajalle. Soitat ystävällesi ja kerro, että et pääse tulemaan. Selitä syy ja ehdota uutta aikaa.

Tilanne 2

Olet kadonnut kaupungissa ja et löydä perille. Pysäytät ohikulkijan ja pyydät apua. Kysy tietä läheiseen S-markettiin ja sano, mistä olet tulossa.
