Practice all writing task types found in the YKI exam. Learn essential Finnish phrases and see model answers for every task.
Assessment criteria
Two independent raters assess each written piece on four criteria. Your final score is the average of both raters.
Task completion
Did you address all points in the prompt? Correct register (formal/informal)?
Vocabulary
Range and accuracy of words. Appropriate Finnish vocabulary for the context.
Grammar
Sentence structure, verb conjugation, case endings. Minor errors are acceptable.
Coherence
Is the text logical and easy to follow? Appropriate use of linking words.
💡 You don't need perfect grammar. A clear message with appropriate vocabulary and structure scores well. Always answer ALL points in the prompt.
Writing tasks with model answers
📌 Strategy: Plan for 5 minutes before writing. Identify: What must you include? What register (formal/informal)? Then write, leaving 3 minutes to check.
Tehtävä 1 — Muodollinen kirje (Task 1 — Formal letter)
Haluat osallistua suomen kielen kurssille paikallisessa opistossa. Kirjoita muodollinen kirje (80–100 sanaa), jossa: esittelet itsesi lyhyesti, kerrot nykyisestä suomen kielen taitotasostasi ja kuinka kauan olet opiskellut, sekä kysyt kurssin ajoista ja hinnasta.
(You want to join a Finnish language course at a local adult education centre. Write a formal letter of 80–100 words where you: introduce yourself briefly, explain your current Finnish level and how long you have studied, and ask about course times and fees.)
Tehtävä 2 — Epävirallinen viesti (Task 2 — Informal message)
Kirjoita viesti (60–80 sanaa) suomalaiselle kaverillesi Kaisalle. Kerro hänelle: et pysty tulemaan hänen juhliin ensi lauantaina, selitä miksi (sinulla on töitä koko päivän), ja ehdota toista tapaamiskertaa.
(Write a message of 60–80 words to your Finnish friend Kaisa. Tell her: you can't come to her party next Saturday, explain why — you're working all day — and suggest meeting another time.)
Tehtävä 3 — Valituskirje (Task 3 — Complaint letter)
Ostit takin verkkokaupasta kaksi viikkoa sitten. Vetoketju on rikki ja hihassa on reikä. Kirjoita muodollinen valituskirje (80–100 sanaa), jossa pyydät uutta tuotetta tai rahojen palautusta.
(You bought a jacket from an online store two weeks ago. The zip is broken and there is a hole in the sleeve. Write a formal complaint of 80–100 words asking for a replacement or full refund.)
Tehtävä 4 — Mielipidekirjoitus (Task 4 — Opinion text)
Paikallinen sanomalehti pyytää lukijoiden mielipiteitä. Kirjoita mielipidekirjoitus (100–120 sanaa) seuraavaan kysymykseen: Pitäisikö kaikkien Suomen kaupunkien tarjota maksuton joukkoliikenne? Perustele mielipiteesi vähintään kahdella syyllä.
(A local newspaper is asking readers' opinions. Write your opinion of 100–120 words on: Should all Finnish cities offer free public transport? Give at least two reasons.)
Tehtävä 5 — Ilmoitus (Task 5 — Notice / announcement)
Kirjoita ilmoitus (50–70 sanaa) taloyhtiön ilmoitustaululle. Taloyhtiö järjestää yhteisen kevätsiivoustalkoot. Mainitse: päivämäärä ja kellonaika, mitä on tarkoitus tehdä, ja kuka voi tulla mukaan.
(Write a notice of 50–70 words for a community board. Your housing company is organising a shared spring cleaning day. Include: date and time, what needs to be done, and who can help.)
Tehtävä 6 — Kertomus (Task 6 — Story / narrative)
Kirjoita lyhyt kertomus (100–130 sanaa) jostakin tapahtumasta, joka muutti käsitystäsi Suomesta tai suomen kielestä. Kertomus voi olla tosi tai kuvitteellinen. Käytä mennyttä aikaa (imperfektiä).
(Write a short story of 100–130 words about an event that changed your view of Finland or the Finnish language. It can be real or imaginary. Use past tense.)

💡 The most important thing in the exam is communicating clearly. Minor grammar mistakes do not fail you — missing content points do.

Tehtävä V1 — Muodollinen kirje (Task W1 — Formal letter, 50% of writing score)
Tarvitset kiireesti hammaslääkäriajan. Kirjoita muodollinen kirje (80–100 sanaa) hammaslääkäriasemalle. Kerro: kuka olet, mikä on ongelma (hammassärky kolme päivää), pyydä ensimmäistä vapaata aikaa, ja anna puhelinnumerosi.
(You need a dental appointment urgently. Write a formal letter of 80–100 words to a dental clinic. Include: who you are, your problem — toothache for 3 days — ask for the earliest appointment, and give your phone number.)

Kirjoita viesti (60–80 sanaa) suomalaiselle kaverillesi Pekalle. Kerro hänelle: löysit hyvän suomen kielen kurssin, miksi luulet sen sopivan myös hänelle, ja kysy haluaako hän liittyä mukaan.
(Write a message of 60–80 words to your Finnish friend Pekka. Tell him: you found a good Finnish language course, why you think it would be good for him too, and ask if he wants to join together.)
Compare your writing with the model answers. Mark yourself on each criterion (1–4).

Check: Did you use a formal opening? Mention your name & problem? Ask for appointment? Include contact?
W2 — Model answer: Message to friend about course
Check: Informal register? Did you mention the course, why good for him, and invite him?
